  • Armenian which until the 19th century was mistakenly considered to be a dialect of the Iranian language forms a separate branch of the Indo-European language family. The language, however, has borrowed from the Persian

  • Armenian is spoken by the Turkish Armenians and Armenians in Armenia, in total some 2,850,000 people. Furthermore, some 1,300,000 people speak it in other parts of the former Soviet Union, especially in the neighbouring countries of Georgia and Azerbaijan. The number of speakers globaly is estimated at about 5,500,000 people.

  • There is Eastern or Yerevan Armenian, which is the official language of the Armenian republic, and Western or Turkish Armenian.

  • Armenian phonology has been influenced by neighboring Caucasian languages though the language shows many Indo-European roots. The language shares a three-way distinction between voiceless, voiced, and ejective stops and fricatives.

  • Armenian is written in the Armenian alphabet which was created by Saint Mesrob Mashtots in 406 AD.
